Amrita Vidyalayam, Koyilandy, observed Hiroshima Day with the solemn purpose of reminding students of the devastating consequences of war and reinforcing the universal message that peace is essential for the survival and progress of humanity. 

The programme began with thought-provoking speeches by Rithunanda and Shivamitra of Class VII, who spoke about the tragic events of Hiroshima and the immense suffering caused by the use of nuclear weapons. Their words highlighted a profound truth: war does not bring lasting victory; it brings destruction, loss of innocent lives, suffering and devastation that can continue for generations. 

Students of Classes VII, VIII and IX were shown an informative and impactful video depicting the horrors of war, the destruction caused by nuclear weapons, and their devastating effects on human beings and the environment. The programme also highlighted the importance of science and technology. Students were reminded that scientific knowledge is a powerful tool that must be used to protect life, promote development and improve the well-being of humanity—not to destroy it. 

As a symbol of peace, students prepared and displayed paper cranes, inspired by the touching story of Sadako Sasaki. A meaningful role play portraying Sadako's story was also presented. The activity helped students understand the human cost of war and the enduring hope for peace represented by the paper crane. 

A “Peace Wall” was created on the bulletin board, where students displayed inspiring thoughts, messages and quotations advocating peace and rejecting violence. Through this activity, students expressed their desire for a world where people live together with love, compassion, unity and mutual respect. 

The Hiroshima Day observance served as a powerful reminder that the true cost of war is measured not in victories or territories, but in human lives lost, families shattered, communities destroyed and generations scarred by suffering. The programme encouraged students to understand that hatred and violence can only lead to further destruction, while dialogue, understanding and compassion can pave the way towards peace. 

The observance concluded with a strong message: Hiroshima must never be repeated. The world does not need more weapons; it needs more understanding. Humanity does not need war; it needs peace. The programme inspired students to become responsible and compassionate citizens who value life, reject violence and contribute towards building a peaceful and harmonious world. 

“Let the lessons of Hiroshima remind us: Never again war. Let there be peace.”
