Introduction

In connection with National Handloom Day, Amrita Vidyalayam, Koyilandy organized a field trip for the students of Classes V A and V B on 7 August 2026. The visit was aimed at helping students understand the importance of India's rich handloom tradition and to provide them with first-hand knowledge of traditional methods of cloth production. 

The students visited Kozhikode Sarvodaya Sangham and Khadi Ulpadana Kendram, Chemancheri, where they got an opportunity to observe various stages of handloom and khadi production. 

 Objectives of the Field Trip

• To create awareness about the importance of handloom and khadi.
• To introduce students to traditional weaving techniques.
• To understand the role of charkha (spinning wheel) and handloom in cloth production.
• To familiarise students with the processes involved in making handwoven fabric.
• To develop respect for the skills and hard work of traditional artisans.
• To encourage students to appreciate and support indigenous products. 

Activities and Learning Experience

During the visit, the students received a detailed explanation about handloom, charkha and the process of making khadi and handwoven fabrics. They observed how threads are prepared and spun and how weaving is carried out using traditional equipment. The students were introduced to the working of the charkha, which is traditionally used for spinning fibres into yarn. They also learned about the handloom, its basic parts and how the threads are interwoven to produce cloth. The visit helped students understand that handloom production requires skill, patience, concentration and careful coordination. They were also able to see how traditional knowledge and craftsmanship are preserved and passed from one generation to another. 

The field trip had a positive and educational impact on the students. It:

Conclusion

The field trip to Kozhikode Sarvodaya Sangham and Khadi Ulpadana Kendram, Chemancheri was an enriching and meaningful learning experience for the students of Classes V A and V B. The practical exposure to handloom, charkha and khadi production helped them understand the importance of preserving India's traditional weaving heritage. The visit successfully connected the celebration of National Handloom Day with experiential learning and encouraged students to value the skills, traditions and efforts of handloom artisans.
