Amrita Vidyalayam, Thoothukudi, observed World Environment Day with a Bee-Flora Plantation Drive organised by AYUDH (Awaken Youth Unite for Dharma), the youth movement guided by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma).
The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Prabaharan Paul, Environmental Volunteer, We Can Trust, Thoothukudi, in the presence of Selvakumar Chandrasekar, Principal, Amrita Vidyalayam, Thoothukudi. Teachers, AYUDH coordinators and students participated in the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest said, "Protecting biodiversity begins with nurturing native plant species and creating habitats that support pollinators. It is encouraging to see students actively contributing to environmental conservation through such meaningful initiatives."
As part of the drive, students planted 52 saplings along a stretch of approximately 100 metres within and around the school campus. The saplings included Neem, Pungam, Moringa, Mango, Jamun, Coconut, Tamarind, Banana, and Tulasi (Holy Basil), all of which contribute to biodiversity conservation and support pollinators and local ecosystems.
A total of 52 participants took part in the programme. The initiative helped create a greener and more pollinator-friendly environment while raising awareness about environmental conservation, biodiversity and sustainable living practices.
The programme also highlighted the important role of bees and other pollinators in maintaining ecological balance and food security, encouraging students to become responsible stewards of nature.
