Amrita Vidyalayam, Nagapattinam, observed World Environment Day with a Bee-Flora Planting Drive organised by AYUDH (Awaken Youth Unite for Dharma), the youth movement guided by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma).
The programme was inaugurated by K. J. Praveen Kumar, IAS, District Collector, Nagapattinam, in the presence of Radhakrishnan Ayyavu, Principal, Amrita Vidyalayam, Nagapattinam. Teachers, AYUDH coordinators and students participated in the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, the District Collector said, "Native plants play an important role in preserving local biodiversity. Encouraging students to plant and nurture flowering species is a meaningful investment in environmental conservation and sustainability."
As part of the drive, students planted 25 flowering saplings, including Hibiscus and Ixora, which support bees and other pollinators. The initiative helped create a greener and more pollinator-friendly campus while raising awareness about biodiversity conservation.
A 3-kilometre awareness rally was also organised to highlight the importance of environmental protection, biodiversity and sustainable living practices.
A total of 350 participants, including students, teachers and AYUDH volunteers, took part in the programme. The initiative sought to help students understand the vital role played by bees and other pollinators in maintaining ecological balance and food security, while encouraging environmentally responsible practices in their daily lives.
